TOP TEN ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR ELECTRICIANS

17th January 2024/

It's safe to say that every electrician has a particular tool they absolutely must have. These items may vary from sparky to sparky based on the type of work they perform.

Without the proper equipment, it's impossible to do electrical work, and every electrician needs a certain set of tools in order to work efficiently and safely.

Therefore, we have compiled a list of what we consider to be the "must-have tools" that every electrician needs to keep in their toolbox.

1.    APPROVED VOLTAGE INDICATOR (AVI)

As it determines if power is there or not, this equipment is a need. Circuit breakers, switches, outlets, and sockets are all used to detect AC voltages used to make sure the power is off before starting an electrical project. There is no electrician who should be without this life-saving device.

2.    INSULATED SCREWDRIVERS

A tool box staple. You’ll need a variety of different types of screwdriver for the differing size screws you’ll encounter on a daily basis, these vary from wood screws, to machine screws. For safety reasons ensure that your screwdrivers are insulated up to 1000V to protect you against electrical shock and arcing.

3.    SIDE CUTTERS/PLIERS

Most Sparkies will have an array of these in their tool box, but the most commonly used ones used on a daily basis are:

•    Traditional Pliers – cutting/stripping wires and handy for removing nails.
•    Long Nose Pliers – the thin, grasping ends make it easy to hold or grab when fishing cable.
•    Side-Cutters – great for when you need to cut wires to specific lengths.

4.    WIRE STRIPPERS

Wire strippers are a necessary equipment to make sure that, when removing a cable's insulation, just the necessary amount of pressure is applied to avoid damaging the copper cable. Some brands can be used to remove the insulation and twin and earth cable's sheath.

5. MULTI FUNCTIONAL TESTER

The multifunctional tester, or MFT, is a need for any electrician to guarantee that any installation is done correctly and that all test readings fulfil the standards as set forth in the IET regulations. It is undoubtedly the electrician's greatest friend.

6. BATTERY DRILL

This tool used to drill holes into hard surfaces like wood, walls, or other objects and secure fasteners using screws. Depending on the task at hand, a different type of drill may be utilised. For instance, for fastening work, a lower-voltage cordless model may be used; yet, for drilling into concrete, a hammer drill will offer greater impact and drill more holes faster.

7. ELECTRICAL WALL CHASER

The device for cutting thin channels and grooves into walls so that conduit and cables can be installed. The use of a great time-saving tool enables precise and clean cutting. Electric discs resembling those used in angle grinders are propelled by the electric motor. For dust-free functioning, the ones with a hoover connection are ideal.

8. MULTI TOOL
A cordless oscillating multi-tool is a handy tool to have in your tool box. It’s versatility is ideal for accurately cutting a variety of materials eg flooring, tiles, plasterboard, wood and PVC.

9. FISH TAPE / RODS

Also known as ‘draw wire’ or ‘electricians snake’ this handy tool is ideal for many applications including drawing cables through conduit or fishing cables across ceilings or down walls.

10. HEAD TORCH / MAGNETIC TORCH
These are a must have as you will be working in the dark on many occasions when the power is turned off. These types of torches are also good as they allow you to work hands free.
